BEAM Addresses Seniors
in Poverty

Between June 1-16, we have kept more than 139 families in their homes. This represents a 113% increase over
a “normal” month
, and we have two weeks left to go. Our Keep Their Homes Campaign helps us meet this enhanced need, which has raised more than $81,000 to provide assistance for families with overdue rent and utility bills.

In addition, our senior case management work continues to provide significant services for those who live independently, and struggle with medical conditions with little to no family nearby. A majority of these clients’ only income is Social Security.

More than 15 volunteers have been conducting weekly check-in calls to 78 seniors identified by BEAM, Beaches Dial-A-Ride and Beaches Community Kitchen, throughout the duration of COVID-19 disruptions and the Jacksonville Mayor’s “Shelter in Place” executive order.

Just last week, a volunteer was delivering groceries from the BEAM food pantry to Betty, a senior who lives alone, when she found the client’s phone was shut off. Upon further examination, Betty was ok, but shared she had to choose between paying for a health bill or her phone bill.

The volunteer reached out to BEAM’s senior case manager Debbie who resolved her outstanding phone bill that day. BEAM was there to help.

No independent, frail senior should ever be without this necessary lifeline.

This is just one small, but important example of how comprehensive our services have become as we work to provide emergency assistance and a path to economic stability.
